How to prepare for Botox

All of our treatments begin with a bespoke consultation with one of our Doctors, to address your personal goals and preferences, but also any questions or concerns you may have.

With that said, we always want to provide as much reassuring & factual information as possible, for you check once you get home after your treatment, or to read up on before you even come in to see us. By keeping yourself informed and prepared with tips like these, you can be confident in your choices and know how to get the best results.

Schedule your appointment at a good time for you

Getting Botox for the first time, or even a top-up, can be an added stress on a busy life, so we want your appointment with us to be as seamless and stress-free as possible. We’re here to help you plan your Botox appointment strategically.

Ideally, you won’t schedule your appointment on a busy day. Instead, you’ll schedule it on a fairly quiet day, allowing plenty of downtime before it begins and after it ends.

For new patients, we often suggest scheduling your first appointment in the morning. By doing this, you’re up and ready to face the day, and have plenty of time before going to bed to remain upright (advisable for several hours to ensure the treatment remains in its targeted location/s), and allow your skin and mind to settle into the new sensations.

Ask your Doctor about medications

Some medications don’t mix well with Botox. If you are on any, you need to discuss them with your Doctor. In some cases, you’ll be advised to stay on them; in other cases, you’ll be advised to stop taking them for the time being.

Some that don’t mix well with Botox include: aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, muscle relaxers, and allergy meds. Generally speaking, if you are taking these medications, you will need to pause taking them in the days leading up to your appointment, and stay off them for a few days afterwards.

How to limit bruising

A common side effect of Botox treatment is bruising, although it is typically minimal. Though we cannot promise zero bruising, there are some tricks to limit the chances of it occurring…

If you smoke, it’s highly recommended that you try to refrain from smoking in the days leading up to your appointment. Doing so will drastically reduce your chances of bruising. Research has shown nicotine can lead to vasoconstriction, which constricts the blood vessels in different parts of your body, prohibiting blood flow. Scars and bruises can take longer to heal at this point, because the oxygen in your blood cannot reach them.

You can also take proactive measures, like applying arnica cream to the areas you plan to get treated in the days running up to your appointment. This natural cream has been proven to reduce the effects of bruising.

Applying ice to treatment areas can also help. Placing an ice pack on your face before and after your appointment can help keep swelling down, and reduce any bruising you may experience.

Get your blood pumping

Another great way to prepare yourself both physically & mentally for your appointment is by cardiovascular exercise- aka ‘cardio’.

Running, walking, or cycling can help to get your blood flowing, helping to psychologically prep you- plus exercise releases endorphins, and we always like happy patients!

You should try to avoid working out directly after your appointment, however. For best results, keep upright & avoid physically exerting yourself for 4 to 5 hours after receiving Botox injections, as this can cause an increase in pain, swelling, and bruising. It can also encourage the Botox to migrate to areas you don’t want it, and be less effective in your targeted areas.

Clean your skin before

When you get your Botox treatment, your face should be clean. If your skin is greasy or has too much makeup when your injections are administered, it can encourage infections.

While your Doctor will likely clean the areas to be treated with an antiseptic prior to your injections, it’s best practise (and helpful for us) if you come into your appointment with clean skin, without makeup. You don’t need to use anything fancy- your usual cleansing routine or simply soap & water and a wash cloth will clean your face, eliminating all chances of infection.

Keep calm & carry on

If you’re happy & confident about getting your Botox injections for the first time, there’s really not much to worry about! You can just walk into your appointment, receive your treatment, and carry on with the rest of your day.

However, some can feel anxiety when going in for their first Botox treatment. If you feel this may be you, we want you to feel as confident & calm as we can, so encourage you to prepare in whatever ways may best help you.

Practicing meditation, listening to music, and reading are all great ways to set your mind at ease. Breathing exercises are also helpful to regulate your body and calm your nervous system should you feel any anxiety before or during treatment. Our Doctors are also very understanding, and happy to answer any questions you may have even on the day, to make sure you’re feeling 100% confident in your treatment.

Used for over 30 years in the aesthetic industry, it is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world and you are in safe and experienced hands with our doctors at The Clinic.

What else is Botox used for?

Botox is sometimes used in helping to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) by carefully blocking the nerves that supply sweat glands with expertly positioned doses. For some this can significantly reduce sweating and subsequently boost confidence.  Regions which benefit from this treatment include axillae (armpits), palms and groin, the effects typically last 4-6 months, often longer up to 9 months.

Botox is also licensed for use in helping to treat chronic migraines.

It is thought Botox works for migraine headaches because it blocks chemicals called neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from your brain. When expertly placed in specific locations it stops the chemicals before they get to the nerve endings around your head and neck. Typically clients require treatment every 3 months to significantly dull or prevent migraine headaches.

What does Botox treatment involve?

During the procedure, small quantities of purified botulinum toxin type A are injected to specific muscles, causing localised temporary paralysis. The muscles in these areas relax and the overlying skin creases relax too.

Most people don’t feel much pain during Botox administration, as it is a minimally-invasive procedure. Some areas will be more sensitive than others though, especially if you are having your palms or soles of your feet treated for sweating. An ice massage or taking a small does of over-the-counter painkiller like Paracetamol can help beforehand, but avoid anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications such as ibuprofen.

After Botox administration

Do not rub, massage or apply pressure to the treated area/s for 24 hours. Keep upright, and avoid lying down or inverting your head or treated areas for 2 to 4 hours after treatment (no downward dog!) as this helps prevent the toxin from spreading to an area where it is not needed or wanted. You should be able to return to your normal routine and activities immediately after the procedure, but if you have any questions just ask your clinician. You can ask as many questions as you like during your appointment, we’re always happy to answer them! If you have any further queries you can always call or email us, or send us a direct message on social media.

Botox results

The effects of your injections typically start to show within 1 to 3 days after treatment, though we recommend you allow 1 to 2 weeks for the full results to show. As it differs for each individual, some people will show results quicker or slower, or require more treatments for their desired look depending on how your body processes the treatment. We are happy to see you for top-up appointments to ensure your final look is exactly what you wish for!

Depending on the area treated and how your body metabolises the treatment, effects may last 3 to 5 months. To maintain the results, you will likely need regular follow-up injections spaced around 4 months apart.

If you would like to know more details, or discuss your specific needs, email The Clinic today and speak to one of our Doctors to start your path to your dream skin.

At The Clinic, we only see patients 18+ and all new patients are booked in for an initial assessment and consultation before any treatment is given. When you book with us, you’ll first receive an initial consultation with one of our partners. We plan for 30 minutes when booking these in, and the appointments cost £50. This is then redeemed against the total cost of any treatment.

How soon before an event should you get cosmetic treatments?

The sun is out more, the flowers are blooming… and we’re all desperately trying to decide what to wear (hat or no hat?) to the celebrations for our nearest & dearest.

Wedding season is fast approaching – for some it’s already here – and whether it’s your big day or you’re looking forward to celebrating someone close, you are likely already be thinking about how you can look your best for the event….

But it’s not just heel heights and cravat colours we’re trying to decide- it’s how to look and feel your best in your skin. With that part at least, we can help (although we do love a hat at a wedding!). Skin prep and beauty treatments should be planned well in advance for any big event, so it is – dare we say it- even more important than the clothes…

👉 Introducing new products or treatments requires a little downtime afterwards, to give your skin time to settle. Sometimes new ingredients can take a while to get used to, and anti-wrinkle treatments and fillers need time to heal to show you at your very best.

How far in advance should you be thinking of getting yourself prepped and glowing?

The sooner you can get started on beauty prep, the better. Just like with final tweaks on a dress or suit, you may well need more than one fitting. Our treatments differ slightly in terms of how long they take to show their full, glorious effects, and how long you need to take a little extra care afterwards.

With any skincare or treatment, it is important to leave enough time for your skin to settle afterwards, whether it’s a new serum, exfoliator or tweakment, you don’t want to be worrying about irritation or marks on the day.

So how much time should you leave before your event to get Botox, Dermal Fillers or Radiosurgery?

When preparing for a big event, be it a beautiful holiday or a special occasion like a wedding, we all like to plan a little in advance…

But when planning your beauty treatments, like Botox, Dermal Fillers or Radiosurgery, it’s important to leave enough time for the full effects to appear, and your skin to heal.

Botox

Although in terms of appointment time, this is a relatively quick procedure, it takes around 2 weeks for the full effects to show with Botox, so the results are not instant. At The Clinic, we suggest you schedule your last treatment appointment at least one month or 5 weeks before the event in order to see the best results possible, and ensure you are absolutely over the moon and ready to party 🍾 This gives the usual 2 week period for it to full effect, and allow a little extra buffer in case anything needs a slight tweak. Results last around three to five months, so if you’re starting a year or in advance, keep in mind you will need to plan around some top-up appointments. The nice thing about this, though, is you can start really small with amounts, and give yourself plenty of time to build up to your perfect look.

If you’re completely new to Botox, it’s always a good idea to give it a little longer, ideally 6 months or more prior to any big event like a wedding. This allows time for a few sessions of smaller treatments, and gives you time to get comfortable with how it looks and feels. It’s also worth noting if you want to smooth out much deeper wrinkles, it will take more than one session to treat and settle.

Dermal Fillers

Results are much faster with fillers, and can be seen soon after treatment, and continue to improve over the next 2-4 weeks. They also last a lot longer than Botox, though exact times depend on the type of filler and where on the body they are used, but think anywhere from one year rather than a few months. For that reason, it’s important to come in for this treatment with even more time than Botox. We suggest having your first filler appointment as soon as you know you have a big event coming– for example, as soon as you get engaged. This can be anywhere from 6 to 18 months in advance, or longer. Again, this allows plenty of time to get used to how the dermal fillers look and feel for you, and leaves time for any final top-ups the month or two before any big event.

Swelling is common with fillers, so leaving yourself time for the skin to settle is important, and much like Botox you want to keep upright for 4 to 6 hours post treatment (no lying down or impressive yoga headstands!) to give the fluid time to settle where it’s wanted. Bruising is also more likely with dermal fillers, so make sure you don’t apply any pressure to the treated areas, steering clear of massages and even face rollers for a week or so.

Radiosurgery

As this procedure involves removing rather than adding, it takes a little longer to heal. This treatment is typically used for mole or skin tag removal, so will leave a small wound that will need time and care to scab over and heal nicely.

In most cases, any dressings can be removed after 3 or 4 days, to allow the area to heal. Most scabs will then naturally fall off in 2 to 4 weeks. You may see a small red or pink mark which typically fades over time, usually the next 12 months. This treatments will need the most time afterwards to settle and heal, so it is important to consider booking your Radiosurgery treatments at least 6 months prior to any big event, if not longer. Healing time varies for each person, and you want to ensure you are absolutely happy and healed well in advance. After all, the whole point is for you feel your best!

All treatments will require some time to heal and show their full effects for you.

All treatments, especially Radiosurgery, require some time afterwards where it is best to avoid wearing makeup, to ensure nothing contaminates the treated areas while they heal. So do bear this in mind when planning social activities afterwards, especially if it is in the run up to any exciting events!

📞 You can call us in the week, or email The Clinic to speak to a Clinician any time, and get glowing in time for summer celebrations ✨

What are the layers of your skin?

Your skin is made up of different layers, and each have their own role to play…

Skincare is a year-round habit that it’s important to get right, and here at The Clinic Market Lavington we always want you to have all the necessary facts to help you achieve the best skin possible.

Despite the mixed weather, we hope everyone has kicked off their 2023 with aplomb, and is still sticking to any new resolutions and healthy habits (or at least some of them!)

It’s important to know what makes up your skin, so you can best decide how you want to care for it. So here we’ve broken down just what the different layers are called, and what that actually means…

Your skin is made up of three layers, and each is made up of different materials.

The epidermis, which is the outer-most layer of skin.

This top layer provides a waterproof barrier and protects your body from harm, keeps your body hydrated, produces new skin cells and contains melanin, which produces your hair, skin and eye pigmentation.

The dermis, which is the middle layer.

This contains tough connective tissues, hair follicles and oil & sweat glands, as well as blood vessels, nerves, and other structures. It is made up of a thin upper layer called the papillary dermis, and a thick lower layer called the reticular dermis.

And the subcutaneous, which is the innermost layer of your skin.

Also known as the hypodermis, this layer is made of fat and connective tissue. This is the bottom layer of skin, and has many important functions, ranging from storing energy, connecting the dermis layer of your skin to your muscles and bones, insulating your body and also protecting your body from harm.

Each layer of your skin is important and plays a vital role. It’s essential you look after each layer, so they can look after you!
