Let’s get into it…

Getting Botox for the first time can be an exciting but also nerve-wracking experience. Here are 30 tips to help you prepare for and maximise your Botox treatment:

Before the Treatment:

1. Research a qualified and experienced medical professional: Ensure that the person administering the Botox is a licensed healthcare professional who specialises in cosmetic treatments. At The Clinic, all our practitioners are fully qualified and practising Doctors, attended by professional medical assistants, who have additional training specifically focussed on cosmetic treatments.

2. Schedule a consultation: Set up a consultation with one of our Doctors to discuss your goals, concerns, and any medical history that may affect the treatment.

3. Understand the procedure: Educate yourself about the Botox procedure, including the process, potential side effects, and expected results. Ask questions during the consultation to clarify any doubts – we are here to help!

4. Discuss your expectations: Clearly communicate your desired outcomes to our Doctors, ensuring they align with what is realistically achievable. We can help break this down specific to your individual needs at this point, which is why your initial consultations are so important.

5. Avoid blood-thinning medications: Refrain from taking blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil supplements a week before the treatment, as they can increase the risk of bruising.

6. Avoid alcohol and tobacco: Avoid consuming alcohol or smoking for a few days before your treatment, as they can affect your body’s healing process.

7. Prepare for possible discomfort: While Botox injections are generally well-tolerated, you can take over-the-counter painkillers like Paracetamol (but not Ibuprofen, as this thins the blood) before your appointment if you’re concerned about any potential discomfort. Take this roughly 30 minutes before your procedure for optimal effects.

8. Stay hydrated: Proper hydration can help optimise the results of your treatment, so make sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.

9. Arrive with a clean face: Come to your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup, oils, or lotions, as these can interfere with the treatment.

During the Treatment:

10. Relax: Try to stay calm and relaxed during the procedure. It typically takes only a few minutes and is generally well-tolerated by most people.

11. Communicate openly: If you feel any discomfort or have concerns during the treatment, don’t hesitate to communicate with the Doctor administering the injections. We can pause at any time.

12. Follow the professional’s instructions: Listen carefully to the instructions given by your Doctor regarding facial movements, post-treatment care, and follow-up appointments.

13. Trust the professional’s judgment: Your Doctor has much experience administering Botox, so trust their expertise when it comes to determining the appropriate dosage and injection sites.

14. Don’t expect immediate results: Botox takes time to work, so be patient. It typically takes a few days to a week to see the full effects.

After the Treatment:

15. Avoid touching or massaging the treated area: For at least 24 hours after the treatment, avoid touching or massaging the treated area to prevent the Botox from spreading to unintended areas.

16. Stay upright: Avoid lying down or bending over for at least four-five hours after the treatment to prevent the Botox from migrating to other areas of the face.

17. Use ice packs (if needed): If you experience any swelling or discomfort, apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the treated area. This can help reduce inflammation. (A pack of frozen vegetables in a tea-towel works just as well!)

18. Avoid strenuous exercise: Refrain from engaging in rigorous exercise or any activities that increase blood flow to the face for at least 24 hours after the treatment.

19. Be cautious with makeup: Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup to the treated area. Avoid using heavy cosmetics or rubbing the area vigorously.

20. Avoid excessive heat exposure: Steer clear of saunas, hot tubs, sunbathing, and other activities that may expose the treated area to excessive heat for a few days post-treatment.

21. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and aid in the healing process.

22. Follow-up appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to assess the results and address any concerns you may have.

Long-Term Care:

23. Protect your skin: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an appropriate SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This can help maintain the effects of your Botox treatment.

24. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Keep to a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management to optimise the longevity of your Botox results.

25. Avoid smoking: Smoking can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, which can diminish the effects of Botox over time.

26. Consider touch-up treatments: Botox results are not permanent, so consider scheduling touch-up treatments to maintain your desired appearance. Most people need touch-ups every four to six months, depending on how fast their body naturally metabolises the Botox.

27. Be patient with repeated treatments: Over time, the effects of Botox may last longer, and you may require fewer treatments to achieve the desired results.

28. Avoid excessive facial movements: Minimise activities that involve repetitive facial movements, such as squinting or frowning, as they can contribute to the development of wrinkles.

29. Don’t overdo it: Maintain a natural look by avoiding excessive amounts of Botox. Work with our Doctors to find the right balance that enhances your features, while maintaining facial expressiveness and your natural beauty.

30. Seek professional advice: If you have any concerns or questions throughout the process, reach out to our Doctors and their teams for guidance and reassurance. We are always here and happy to answer your queries at any stage in the process.

Remember, these tips are meant to provide general guidance, but it’s crucial to consult with our qualified healthcare professionals for personalised advice, tailored to your specific situation and desired results. Everyone’s skin is individual, as are their dream looks!

How to prepare for Botox

All of our treatments begin with a bespoke consultation with one of our Doctors, to address your personal goals and preferences, but also any questions or concerns you may have.

With that said, we always want to provide as much reassuring & factual information as possible, for you check once you get home after your treatment, or to read up on before you even come in to see us. By keeping yourself informed and prepared with tips like these, you can be confident in your choices and know how to get the best results.

Schedule your appointment at a good time for you

Getting Botox for the first time, or even a top-up, can be an added stress on a busy life, so we want your appointment with us to be as seamless and stress-free as possible. We’re here to help you plan your Botox appointment strategically.

Ideally, you won’t schedule your appointment on a busy day. Instead, you’ll schedule it on a fairly quiet day, allowing plenty of downtime before it begins and after it ends.

For new patients, we often suggest scheduling your first appointment in the morning. By doing this, you’re up and ready to face the day, and have plenty of time before going to bed to remain upright (advisable for several hours to ensure the treatment remains in its targeted location/s), and allow your skin and mind to settle into the new sensations.

Ask your Doctor about medications

Some medications don’t mix well with Botox. If you are on any, you need to discuss them with your Doctor. In some cases, you’ll be advised to stay on them; in other cases, you’ll be advised to stop taking them for the time being.

Some that don’t mix well with Botox include: aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, muscle relaxers, and allergy meds. Generally speaking, if you are taking these medications, you will need to pause taking them in the days leading up to your appointment, and stay off them for a few days afterwards.

How to limit bruising

A common side effect of Botox treatment is bruising, although it is typically minimal. Though we cannot promise zero bruising, there are some tricks to limit the chances of it occurring…

If you smoke, it’s highly recommended that you try to refrain from smoking in the days leading up to your appointment. Doing so will drastically reduce your chances of bruising. Research has shown nicotine can lead to vasoconstriction, which constricts the blood vessels in different parts of your body, prohibiting blood flow. Scars and bruises can take longer to heal at this point, because the oxygen in your blood cannot reach them.

You can also take proactive measures, like applying arnica cream to the areas you plan to get treated in the days running up to your appointment. This natural cream has been proven to reduce the effects of bruising.

Applying ice to treatment areas can also help. Placing an ice pack on your face before and after your appointment can help keep swelling down, and reduce any bruising you may experience.

Get your blood pumping

Another great way to prepare yourself both physically & mentally for your appointment is by cardiovascular exercise- aka ‘cardio’.

Running, walking, or cycling can help to get your blood flowing, helping to psychologically prep you- plus exercise releases endorphins, and we always like happy patients!

You should try to avoid working out directly after your appointment, however. For best results, keep upright & avoid physically exerting yourself for 4 to 5 hours after receiving Botox injections, as this can cause an increase in pain, swelling, and bruising. It can also encourage the Botox to migrate to areas you don’t want it, and be less effective in your targeted areas.

Clean your skin before

When you get your Botox treatment, your face should be clean. If your skin is greasy or has too much makeup when your injections are administered, it can encourage infections.

While your Doctor will likely clean the areas to be treated with an antiseptic prior to your injections, it’s best practise (and helpful for us) if you come into your appointment with clean skin, without makeup. You don’t need to use anything fancy- your usual cleansing routine or simply soap & water and a wash cloth will clean your face, eliminating all chances of infection.

Keep calm & carry on

If you’re happy & confident about getting your Botox injections for the first time, there’s really not much to worry about! You can just walk into your appointment, receive your treatment, and carry on with the rest of your day.

However, some can feel anxiety when going in for their first Botox treatment. If you feel this may be you, we want you to feel as confident & calm as we can, so encourage you to prepare in whatever ways may best help you.

Practicing meditation, listening to music, and reading are all great ways to set your mind at ease. Breathing exercises are also helpful to regulate your body and calm your nervous system should you feel any anxiety before or during treatment. Our Doctors are also very understanding, and happy to answer any questions you may have even on the day, to make sure you’re feeling 100% confident in your treatment.
